Insert clever post title here

My goal was to write a post every weekend, but it's difficult when you work 3 12-hour-shifts in row and still have 1 more tomorrow. I've worked 5 days altogether officially as an RN since my last post. I definitely feel more confident than I did a week ago, but the learning has only just begun.

I had one preceptor, Anita, for the first 2 days who has been a nurse for many years (also know as a "seasoned" nurse) who was very patient and willing to teach me anything. She also randomly bought me a chocolate chip cookie one day, so she officially won me over.

I have had a second preceptor for the past few days named Michele. Also patient and welcoming and willing to teach me whatever she can. She graduated from nursing school just a year ago, so we are on more similar playing fields. This has been great since she was in my position more recently, and it's really encouraging to see what a confident and skilled nurse she has become in just a year. I still ask tons of questions and feel clumsy and slow most of the time, but I'm getting there! It's funny that when I'm at work, I almost forget that I'm in Alaska so far away from home. Especially when people talk about how hot it is outside. Then I remember where I am and realize how funny that is. Silly, Alaskans.

I promised myself that I would go to bed early tonight since I'm exhausted with one more long shift before my 4 day break. Easier said than done, especially since it looks more like 6pm than 10pm outside, but I must cut this one short. Pictures next time. Nighty night!

Henry's Birth Story

Well, it's been nearly 6 years since I've posted a blog! So much has happened in that time including the birth of our second son. Even though I don't update this site anymore, Henry deserves a spot in this series! April 9, 2021 I’ve been meaning to document Henry’s birth story all these years but haven’t prioritized it till now. Part of the reason was that it wasn’t dramatic or very eventful the way Hunter’s was, so it felt like less of a “story” to tell. However, it’s OUR story - Henry’s and mine. And I’ve come to realize that a “birth story” can be so much more than just how a person enters the world. No one’s story is exactly like someone else’s, and each one is special in its own way. It’s like the perspective of being a labor and delivery nurse in regards to the question of “do births become less special when you’ve seen so many of them?”. Not at all, because even after seeing hundreds of other babies be born, it’s THAT baby’s first and only birth. There’s nothing more...

Hunter

Hunter’s birth story It has taken me over 6 weeks to finally “write” this all down (and it's been over 2 years since my last post!). It’s been time consuming and exhausting and difficult to find adequate words to describe the emotional roller coaster of new motherhood. But it’s important to me to document my story, and it’s been therapeutic to share what happened and reflect on the highs and lows of this birth experience. I’ve always loved hearing and reading about others’ birth stories which is part of why I became a labor and delivery nurse in the first place. Mine is not especially dramatic or earth-shattering and there were never any life or death moments, but it did shake up my world more than I thought it would.  Cory and I went to the hospital at 11am on Saturday May 25th for a scheduled non-stress test that my doctor scheduled since I was almost a week overdue. I had been having contractions that morning but nothing painful. By noon, the test was complete, but the co...

A Double Life

It hasn't even been 2 weeks since I got back from Phoenix, but I miss it terribly. I miss my friends. I miss my family. 6 days there was such a teaser. It wasn't long enough and I didn't quite get to see everyone and do everything I wanted, but I loved every minute of it. God welcomed me back with a lightning show as my plane descended. Flashes of illumination throughout the dark cloudy sky over the city lights. This happens to be one of my favorite things in all of nature. He knows me well :) It was nearly 11pm when I landed and Mom and Joanna picked me up, but we stopped by Laura and Ben's house anyway to see them and Brynley (who was sound asleep, but it was worth it). As I expected, I was very emotional that night. If you haven't guessed, I have a very tight-knit family. I never pictured myself living so far away from them. It was such a relief to be near them again. It felt really good knowing I was missed just as much! My week was not particularly ev...
