Where Are We? Aska!

There's something uniquely special about watching your sibling be a parent. I love my sister so dearly, and now I get to see her love this little girl who loves her back immensely. It's surreal and beautiful. Needless to say, I was beyond thrilled to have them up here for a whole week! It just so happened to be the coldest week of the season yet (lots of snow and -1 degrees at one point!), but we still had the best time together! Ben joined us later on in the week and added even more happiness :) We played in the snow as much as we could, went sledding, ate really well, drank lots of Starbucks, played games, enjoyed the cozy fireplace, and saw breathtaking views that you would NEVER see in Phoenix!

I know how people get really annoyed when people go on and on gushing about their kids, but this is my niece, so it's different. I'm going to gush away.

I was amazed at how much Brynley had grown up since I last saw her in September. A month away from her 2nd birthday, she not only repeats everything she hears but she expresses her own opinions so clearly and deliberately in full sentences like "That scares me! It's okay, I feel better now." She doesn't call me Cacky anymore because she can pronounce Cathy perfectly. She is independent and adventurous. She whispers when she's really excited. She loves watching YouTube videos and singing songs. She's really into opposites and pointing out sad vs. happy, big vs. little, slow vs. fast, etc. She has never met a slide she didn't love. I couldn't get enough of her. I was even okay with waking up at 3:30am when she was up and ready to play. Here are some of the highlights of the week.

The Anchorage Museum had an entire children's section that had so many of Bryn's favorite things! She spent a lot of time in this model airplane saying "Cathy come too!"

She LOVES books! I would read one to her and ask her all of the characters' names, then she would go through it and point to each one and "Know name?" just like I did.

Oatmeal chocolate chip cookies. Enough said.

At first she wanted nothing to do with Santa at the mall, but she eventually got this close to him and danced and sang "Jingle Bells" with him.

She really got a kick out of seeing her breath outside!

There's nothing like having your sister close by, especially when you're this cold!

"My kid brother looked like a tic about to pop." Name that movie!

I'm practically walking on the ocean at Beluga Point!

Love love love :)

Just when I didn't think she could get any cuter...

"That's a kiss!"

Lots of play time!

Ben walked out the door his first night here and said "Hey look! Moose!"

Overjoyed to have this wonderful family come all the way up here to visit!

Henry's Birth Story

Well, it's been nearly 6 years since I've posted a blog! So much has happened in that time including the birth of our second son. Even though I don't update this site anymore, Henry deserves a spot in this series! April 9, 2021 I’ve been meaning to document Henry’s birth story all these years but haven’t prioritized it till now. Part of the reason was that it wasn’t dramatic or very eventful the way Hunter’s was, so it felt like less of a “story” to tell. However, it’s OUR story - Henry’s and mine. And I’ve come to realize that a “birth story” can be so much more than just how a person enters the world. No one’s story is exactly like someone else’s, and each one is special in its own way. It’s like the perspective of being a labor and delivery nurse in regards to the question of “do births become less special when you’ve seen so many of them?”. Not at all, because even after seeing hundreds of other babies be born, it’s THAT baby’s first and only birth. There’s nothing more...

A Double Life

It hasn't even been 2 weeks since I got back from Phoenix, but I miss it terribly. I miss my friends. I miss my family. 6 days there was such a teaser. It wasn't long enough and I didn't quite get to see everyone and do everything I wanted, but I loved every minute of it. God welcomed me back with a lightning show as my plane descended. Flashes of illumination throughout the dark cloudy sky over the city lights. This happens to be one of my favorite things in all of nature. He knows me well :) It was nearly 11pm when I landed and Mom and Joanna picked me up, but we stopped by Laura and Ben's house anyway to see them and Brynley (who was sound asleep, but it was worth it). As I expected, I was very emotional that night. If you haven't guessed, I have a very tight-knit family. I never pictured myself living so far away from them. It was such a relief to be near them again. It felt really good knowing I was missed just as much! My week was not particularly ev...

First Snow: Check!

It happened. It snowed. It snowed back in Aril when I was just visiting, but this was the real thing where it stuck all over the trees and cars and ground. September 23rd, first snow of the season, and I lived! Plus, it had melted by the next day. The mountains are GORGEOUS though! After that random bout of winter, fall took over. It doesn't get warmer than 50, the leaves are changing color and falling, and it's raining more often than not. I'm not gonna lie...I've really been enjoying my new stylish coats and drinking chai tea lattes on a regular basis. Cory and I took a short drive to Birchwood where we explored Beach Lake and caught these views... If only this season would last longer than a month. The freezing cold (aka the age of darkness) is on it's way, but I'm doing my best to take in my surroundings now without dwelling so much on what's to come. I still find myself stopping now and then thinking "Holy crap, I actually live he...
